Each Radio Flyer toddler balance bike is made to support those earliest riding adventures. With easy-to-mount frames, adjustable seats, comfortable grips, and durable wheels, these pedal-less balance bikes help young riders build the core skills needed for a lifetime of bike riding. From the backyard to the sidewalk, our lightweight balance bikes help kids grow stronger, steadier, and more confident with every glide. And if you are looking for a ride beyond the world of bikes, check out our ride-on toys and animal riders for even more ways to roll.

From First Push to Pedal-Ready

Whether it's their very first ride or the final step before a pedal bike, our kids' learning bikes are made for every stage. Lightweight frames make these pedal-less bikes easy for toddlers to steer or lift, while durable wheels provide a quiet, smooth ride indoors, outdoors, and wherever their adventures take them. Looking to practice pedaling too? Balance bikes are a great compliment to tricycles. One teaches balance. The other teaching pedaling. That’s all they need before taking on a pedal bike. The word around the neighborhood is that kids who start with a toddler bike transition quicker and easier to a pedal bike. Some even completely skip training wheels altogether! We recommend pairing their bike with one of our kids' safety helmets to build those safe riding habits from the start.

This bike is the next best step from the baby walking bikes and is helping him learn the concept of balance and gliding. Also great to work out that extra toddler energy!! Frequently Asked Questions About Balance Bikes

What is a balance bike, and how does it work?

A balance bike is a pedal-less bike. Kids sit on the seat and push the bike forward with their feet, learning balance and coordination before it’s time to transition to a pedal bike. Kids often start with slow steps, then a faster glide, and can eventually learn to lift both feet between strides.

Should I get my 3-year-old a balance bike?

Yes, a balance bike that a toddler rider can comfortably control is often one of the best ways for a 3-year-old to learn riding skills. Because there are no pedals to manage, children can focus on balance and steering while building confidence at their own pace. Many kids who start on a child's balance bike transition to a pedal bike more easily and often skip training wheels altogether.

What age is best for a balance bike?

Most standard toddler bikes are designed for children ages 18 months to 5 years. A balance bike for a 2-year-old is often a great choice because it helps build confidence and coordination early. If your little one is even younger than 2-years-old, look for a baby balance bike. Baby balance bikes are lower to the ground and are built for extra stability with 3 or 4 wheels or a wide-wheel design. Read our guide, Best Age for Balance Bikes, to learn more.

What size balance bike does my child need?

Balance bikes are typically sized by inseam. Your child should be able to sit on the seat with their feet flat on the ground. Most of our bikes fit kids with inseams between 12 and 20 inches.

How is a balance bike different from a tricycle?

A balance bike teaches coordination, steering, and balance, while a tricycle focuses on pedaling. Both balance bikes and trikes help kids develop the skills they need to ride a pedalbike. Because balance is often considered the hardest bike-riding skill to learn, many parents choose our lightweight balance bike to help young riders prepare for a pedal-bike.

Does my child need a helmet with a balance bike?

Yes. Even without pedals, spills can happen. A properly fitted kids' safety helmet helps protect your child and build safe riding habits early.

Should I choose a balance bike or training wheels?

Most experts recommend starting with a push bike, such as a balance bike. One of the biggest challenges of riding a bicycle is that it requires multiple skills at once: balancing, pedaling, and steering. Kids often end up depending on training wheels because it is too much for them to take on all at once. These pedal-less balance bikes allow kids to naturally and progressively add skills along the way. This makes learning to ride fun, playful, and rewarding.

Do balance bikes work on all surfaces?

Yes. Balance bikes can be used both indoors and outdoors. Non-air tires are low-maintenance and ride well on sidewalks, driveways, and park paths. Air tires are the most robust balance bike tire option and can be taken over grass and gravel. Choose the balance bike tire type that can handle the terrain of your family adventures and how much maintenance you are willing to do.

Can balance bikes grow with my child?

Absolutely. Look for balance bikes that include adjustable seats and handlebars. This adjustability will help your balance bike last through more stages. Adjustable seat heights on a balance bike are especially important for those with kids in the lower and upper size percentiles to ensure a comfortable fit.

What age should a child stop using a balance bike?

There's no specific age when a child should stop using a balance bike. Most children transition to a pedal bike once they can confidently glide, steer, and balance on their own, typically between ages 3 and 6. Some kids are ready sooner, while others enjoy riding a balance bike longer to build confidence before moving to pedals.
