5 Ways You Can Celebrate World Environment Day at Home Everyday

For World Environment Day this year, we thought long and hard about how our sustainability efforts impact our environment, our community and YOU! With big initiatives such as striving to be a landfill-free headquarters and planting trees for every product purchased on radioflyer.com, we feel confident we are moving in the right direction to leave this world better than we found it.

We want to help you make those decisions too! There are little things that can be done every day to impact the environment in a positive way and many of them don’t take any time at all – just a change in habits! Today we are sharing our best tips with you.

Walk or bike the kids to school

If you’re lucky enough to be close to school, walking, biking or little-red-triking to school is a fun way to get some exercise, reduce carbon emissions from the car and spend time with your little ones. Teaching them the benefits of walking or biking can also be priceless time spent together.

Many employees at our Radio Flyer HQ, who we call Flyers, bike to work year-round and even more bike in the summer months. It’s a great way to get your blood pumping before a day full of work!

Try composting at home

It is becoming more common to find compost options and recycling cans at local businesses, but sometimes it can be hard to come by! While you don’t always have control over that, focusing on how you dispose of waste at home is totally up to you. Composting has so many household benefits, including less and lighter garbage bags to take out on garbage day. Many cities have composting services and if yours doesn’t, it’s easy to get started on your own. If you’d like to learn more, check out the Compost Foundation website!

At the Radio Flyer HQ we composted over 2,000 lbs of food waste in 2018. By providing proper waste and recycling receptacles for our Flyers we recycled/composted 96% of waste generated at our headquarters in 2018!

Reduce your carbon footprint

Your carbon footprint is measured by the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels. Radio Flyer is focusing on improving energy efficiency in all of our processes to drive down our carbon footprint. An easy way for you to reduce yours is by eating local food. A delicious way to help the environment! Eating local food means your food didn’t have to travel long distances on a truck, so you are indirectly responsible for less carbon dioxide emissions. It’s a win-win.

You can also grow your own food, making the travel time from garden to table virtually zero! Little ones have so many opportunities to learn about the outdoors when they spend time in the garden, too. At Radio Flyer, our employees have the opportunity to grow and harvest their own food in our Little Green Garden, which is located right in the backyard of Radio Flyer HQ! Flyers can enjoy locally grown food for their lunch and to take home. This helps us eat locally in the summer with fresh herbs and vegetables.

Extend the life of your favorite Radio Flyer products

Radio Flyer is committed to improving our sustainability each year with new initiatives. In order to keep our products in the homes of our consumers, we provide resources for you to keep your product looking like new, year after year. Our replacement parts section of the website allows you to just replace the pieces you need – at little or no cost to you! We also have a list of service centers around the country who are familiar with our products and would be happy to help you get yours back to feeling like new again.

One of our favorite restoration projects was sent in from one of our consumers in Iowa. He turned his original Town and Country wagon into an updated, safe wagon for his granddaughter to enjoy just as he did as a kid. Now that’s something to cheer about!
