FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CPSC, Radio Flyer Inc. Announce Recall to Repair Model 8 Roadster
WASHINGTON, D.C. In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Radio Flyer Inc. of Chicago, Illinois is voluntarily
recalling for repair certain Model 8 Roadsters manufactured before January of
2002. The horns of the recalled Model 8 Roadsters contain a small part which
could pose a choking hazard to a young child if the horn were removed.
Radio Flyer Inc. has received 19 reports, as of July 10, of horns
being pulled off of the steering wheel of the Model 8 Roadster but no reports
of injury.
Even though all sample Roadsters submitted for independent testing
have met all governmental and industry safety standards, Radio Flyer redesigned
the horn to increase the margin of safety and chose to recall the horns as originally
designed for replacement.
The Model 8 Roadster is about 26-inches long, 10-inches wide,
and 11-inches high. The Roadster has a red steel body and a plain red rubber
horn on a black steering wheel. "Radio Flyer" and "8" graphics appear on both
sides of the Roadster. A child sits on the Roadster and moves the car with his
or her feet. The Roadster is for use by children 1-4 years old.

Only certain Model 8 Roadsters are subject to recall. All Model
8 Roadsters manufactured on or after January of 2002, have redesigned horns
and are not being recalled. A label with the date of manufacture is located
on the bottom of the Roadster. The label will have the letters "MD" followed
by two numbers separated by a slash. The first number signifies the month of
manufacture (01 for Jan, 02 for Feb,......12 for Dec) and the number after the
slash represents the year of manufacture (example MD 01/2002 for manufacture
date of January 2002). If the number after the slash is 2002 or higher, the
Roadster has a redesigned horn and is not being recalled.

Any red horn with a star embossed on it has been redesigned. A
Model 8 Roadster manufactured in 2001 is not recalled if its red horn has an
embossed star.

Toy stores, discount stores, catalogues and web retailers sold
Model 8 Roadsters nationwide from January, 2001 through July, 2002 for about
$70.
Consumers should take the recalled Roadsters away from young children
immediately. Any consumer who is uncertain whether a Model 8 Roadster is covered
by this recall for replacement should telephone Radio Flyer Inc. at 800-621-7613.
A replacement steering wheel to repair the Roadster
may be also be obtained at no cost by calling Redwagons at 800-708-9246.
